Ruschia macowanii is a mesemb or vygie, a sprawling to rounded shrublet of the Velddrif to Bredasdorp coastal area.

Ruschia is one of the larger genera within the Aizoaceae family, comprising about 220 species. The genus is quite variable, some of the species being spiny (the doringvygies), while R. macowanii is not.

Several Ruschia species also tend to creep along the ground. Although R. macowanii does tend to sprawl a bit, many of its branches are erect, growing to 25 cm in height (Smith, et al, 1998; Manning and Goldblatt, 1996).
