When the Tylecodon cacalioides plant dies, this castle of hollow towers results from the drying and decay. Succulent and fibrous components are all gone from the erect tubes, the durable skins or coverings persist in horizontal wrinkles, darkened and tougher than paper; good as kindling for the evening fire (Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2015; Leistner, (Ed.), 2000; iNaturalist).
