Tiny water cells glisten in sunlight on the Tetragonia reduplicata leaves. Stems and buds may also have such cells, or minute hairs on their respectively dull red and pale yellow, rough-textured surfaces.

The buds show their seams where the flower segments will part when opening. Thick wings are already present upon the red-dotted and sparsely hairy ovaries positioned below the perianths (iNaturalist).
