The Tetragonia nigrescens clusters of buds beat the leaves for hairiness. Some hairs glisten, others are pale, not quite white and variable in length. The conspicuous leaf hairs are sparsely present on some of the margins only. Also the angular, red-rimmed stem has hairs, uneven in length.
Some leaf blades have bulging basal sections flanking the midribs. The blade surfaces are faintly mottled, some hairs visible upon them. There are also grains of sand scattered on the leaves of the low-growing plant living in sandy soil (Manning, 2007; Le Roux, et al, 2005; iNaturalist).
