The variably paddle-shaped to oval Tetragonia nigrescens leaves are stalked and alternate. The fleshy blades glisten from large, watery surface cells and minuscule mottling or protuberances.

The midrib may be noticeable in the lower halves of some large leaves. The entire margins of some leaves have a hint of turning down in parts. The leaves are red on their lower surfaces on some T. nigrescens plants (Manning, 2007; Le Roux, et al, 2005; iNaturalist).
