Tulbaghia maritima dry inflorescence husks

The pale, dry and empty fruit capsule husks of Tulbaghia maritima persist at the stem-tip in the photo taken in July. The young fruits were green, short oblong to globose capsules, longitudinally three-segmented. The erect, leafless flower stalks become about 20 cm to 30 cm long. 

The flowers of T. maritima that preceded these fruits grow in an umbel, its structure still recognisable here. The tepals spread at the top of the longish (2 cm), cylindrical tube, the corolla mouth narrow. The tepal lobes are pink-mauve with yellow centres from appendages arising from the inner tepals in the mouth.

The buds are initially enclosed in two spathes that become reflexed, out of the way of the open flowers. The stamens are enclosed in the corolla tube.

Flowering happens from late spring to early autumn (Moriarty, 1997; Bond and Goldblatt, 1994; iNaturalist).
