Trachyandra ciliata, commonly wild cabbage and in Afrikaans veldkool (veld cabbage), is a sprawling perennial reaching heights around 50 cm.
Contrary to the common name the plant resembles the onion more than any form of cabbage. Maybe the usage of the plant as a vegetable suggested resemblance to cabbage.
The species distribution is coastal in the west and south of South Africa, only in the Northern, the Western and the Eastern Cape.
The plants grow in sandy soils in its mainly winter rainfall habitat. The species is not considered to be threatened in its habitat early in the twenty first century (Manning, 2007; Van Wyk and Gericke, 2000; http://redlist.sanbi.org).
