The inflorescence of Babiana mucronata subsp. mucronata comprises several stalkless flowers in a two-ranked spike. All the flowers are angled up from the shared flower stalk, a secund arrangement. These flowers exude a slightly acrid odour.
It is said that the Afrikaans name for the genus, bobbejaantjie (little baboon), relates to the proclivity of baboons for the globose, underground corms of these plants (Manning, 2007; Manning and Goldblatt, 1997; Leistner, (Ed.), 2000; iNaturalist; https://casabio.org).
