Bulbinella cauda-felis August flowering

This stand of Bulbinella plants flowering in the northwest of the Western Cape is thought to be Bulbinella cauda-felis.

Several other Bulbinella species produce white flowers, such as B. elata that has broader leaves, B. nutans bearing a short, conical inflorescence, B. eburniflora with glaucous leaves (and is range-restricted south of Nieuwoudtville) and B. graminifolia that has grass-like leaves as the specific name indicates. Species like B. latifolia, B. elegans and B. triquetra have white or yellow flowers.

The floral structures of Bulbinella species are very similar. The differences occur much in size, their underground bulb and root structures, as well as the leaves.

Herbal remedies from several Bulbinella plants are widely useful, also important in livestock feeding (Le Roux, et al, 2005; Van Wyk and Gericke, 2000; Manning and Goldblatt, 1997; iNaturalist).
