Almost all the Berzelia species grow naturally only in parts of the Western Cape. This one found in the Eastern Cape as well, including the mountains to the south of the Langkloof, is thought to be Berzelia commutata.
The spherical flowerheads are numerous, not now white as when the almost countless tiny florets open. Young, cream stem growth is already exceeding the flowerheads in height, partly covered in small, ericoid leaves (Moriarty, 1997; Bond and Goldblatt, 1984; iNaturalist).
