Young stem growth above the Berzelia commutata flowerheads, now fruiting, shows more of the fresh, creamy yellow stem colour than the older ones below. That may be caused by increased older leaf size, as well as by fading colour on the older stems.
Numerous young stems angle up and outwards from every main stem (Moriarty, 1997; Bond and Goldblatt, 1984; iNaturalist).
