Disa intermedia is a terrestrial orchid growing leaves and flowers annually from its perennial tubular rootstock.
This species does not occur in South Africa, but near the border in Swaziland where it is endemic, growing in dry and stony montane grassland. It is found at elevations between 1200 m and 1500 m where convection rain falls in summer and the winters are cold.
The species is considered endangered in its habitat that is steadily becoming further degraded early in the twenty first century. Remembered in its distribution area as a common flower of times past, it has become rare (www.sntc.org.sz; www.sntc.org.sz).
