Gymnosporia buxifolia, the common spikethorn, achieves above average height in the scrub of the Little Karoo. Often found near the freshwater streams or their seasonally dry courses down the slopes of hills and mountains. It grows in loamy and sandy soils.
G. buxifolia is a notable feature in flower. The pleasant sight of a lavish covering of white flowers is countered slightly by the less pleasant flower scent (Coates Palgrave, 2002; Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2010).
