Crassula orbicularis is another of the about sixty Crassula species growing in the Little Karoo. C. orbicularis will spread in shade of karoid scrub in clay soil to form large stands of scattered leaf rosettes.

These plants are tolerant of harsh conditions imposed by temperature or low rainfall, although it is also found where rainfall is high, such as cool, damp forests where its appearance changes with the conditions.

The more environments a plant adapts to, the more appearances it may present; like the more countries a person lives in, the more languages he or she learns to speak. The constraints of life for an individual plant or person are of course much narrower than for a group, species or race (Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2015; iNaturalist; www.plantzafrica.com).
