One may walk for hours without seeing any. Then unexpectedly, growing close together, there will be several of whatever one was hoping to find. When they’re small and hidden under the bushes like Adromischus maculatus, the sudden excitement after a long wait even more pronounced.

Attuned to taking pleasure from every spotting brings a strong series of satisfying plant, animal and bird encounters on every hike. On days when a specific, less common plant is the purpose of the walk, the experience of other wondrous sightings becomes incidental or missed entirely.

Specific goals of items listed or distances to be covered may mask the ever-present rewards of nature. Satisfaction comes from the specific achievements, but life is bigger, bestowing more, unless one pushes too hard.

Awareness is sharpened by going into nature often, becoming well-armed with that expectant observational mindset that reveals the miracles. The monomania of everyday obligations is overcome in the veld, particularly when alone or when there is little talking. The meditation no longer comes from the bush alone.
