The often erect, green leaves of Aptosimum procumbens form a dense, lush mat spreading along the undulating Karoo ground and even over stones. Procumbent branches grown from a woody base result in the mat that may measure 1 m in diameter per plant.

Covering bare ground is a useful contribution in this arid land. Tortoises appreciate the leaves, presented conveniently within reach for browsing. Stock and game mostly shun them, having better options (Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2010).
