Trichodiadema mirabile flowering in summer

Trichodiadema mirabile is a low-growing Karoo shrublet growing white flowers.

The Karoo is an important part of the distribution range of the small Trichodiadema mesembs or vygies. The bristly, ornate diadems on their leaf-tips originate from leaf tissue, not from stem structures as in the case of cactus plant spines. Water collects among these bristles particularly from dew and rain, absorbed by the plants; a very welcome resource when there is no moisture in the ground for the roots.

T. mirabile fruit capsules have six locules with characteristic expanding keels lying close together and diverging at their tips. The covering membranes over the locules are V-shaped (Smith, et al, 1998; Bond and Goldblatt, 1984; Wikipedia; iNaturalist).
