Bulbine praemorsa

Bulbine praemorsa is usually a slender perennial growing about four to eight short, succulent leaves annually from a small tuber. The leaves sheathe or clasp each other at the base successively, as well as the flowering stem in the centre.

The earliest leaves on the outside are smaller than the inner ones. Strong-growing older plants develop a more rosette-shaped leaf growth, the young and weaker growing ones starting off with leaves in two distichous arrays.

Yellow or orange flowers are produced in an erect raceme in winter or early spring. The photo was taken during August north of Springbok (Manning, 2009; Le Roux, et al, 2005; iNaturalist).
