Nemesia cheiranthus finger signs

Nemesia cheiranthus, the long-eared nemesia, flowers widespread in Namaqualand, also in the Biedouw Valley where the photo was taken.

It is mainly the central pair of upper petal lobes that form a V-sign above the rest of the flower in this plant, the outer pair of lobes mainly flexed back, but inconsistently.

The yellow lower lip of the flower diverges strongly into two lobes. The pair of prominent, dark yellow bulges is usual near the base of this lip, below the bluish band at the base of the upper lip.

The white spur protrudes in the centre below the lower lip, usually around 4 mm long (Manning, 2007; iNaturalist).
