Muraltia squarrosa, sometimes commonly called the hornless purplegorse, grows in both fynbos and renosterveld in the southerly distribution of the species.

The shrub is prickly, due to the small spines found at every leaf-tip. The tiny butterfly-like flowers range from pale to deep pinkish. Stem and leaf hairiness contrast against the sheer smoothness of the flowers with only slight marginal coarseness (Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2015; Moriarty, 1997; Bond and Goldblatt, 1984; iNaturalist).
