Nelia pillansii is yet another dwarf mesemb that is adapted to life in the desert-like environment of the far northwest of South Africa. A ground-hugging, compact body equips the plant for the lifestyle that can make it on this land. Small, dense leaf clusters weather the more silent storms of drought and temperature extremes that test plants and the other living things here continually.

There are elevated "subsidiary" cells present on the leaves near the stomata that contribute to moisture retention by reducing local evaporation on a micro-scale (Frandsen, 2017; Le Roux, et al, 2005; iNaturalist; https://www.frontiersin.org).
