Psammophora modesta

Psammophora modesta or gomvy (gum fig or glue fig) makes a living in this rugged land, exposed to the elements that dont hold back. This part of the northern, coastal Richtersveld and the Namibian south coast receives less than 100 mm of rain per annum. The plants grow in full sun on rocky slopes and plains in calcium rich soil.

The leaves are sticky, resulting in sand becoming attached to them, forming a brown sand covering. The plants may be confused with some Arenifera species that grow in this region, but also further south (Smith, et al, 1998).
