Hermannia trifurca calyces

The shiny brown surface of the Hermannia trifurca calyx is coarse with scattered hairs or tiny bulges or both. The acutely pointed lobe tips are angular over the flowing curves of the softer textured petals. The white stigma-tipped styles are curiously protruding from the yet closed buds, not from the open flowers.

The stalked flowers nod in usually horizontal, arching racemes. One flower grows from the leaf axil at each node on an upper stem.

Flowering happens from late winter to midspring (Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2010; Manning, 2007; Manning and Goldblatt, 1997; iNaturalist).
