The conspicuous spur on the flower of Habenaria falcicornis subsp. caffra is a special feature of these plants. The specific name falcicornis means sickle-shaped horn; falcatus being sickle-shaped and cornu a horn (both words Latin), referring to this very long spur, usually curving down from the back of the flowers lip. Spur lengths vary between 2,3 cm and 4,3 cm (Liltved and Johnson, 2012; Pooley, 1998).
