Habenaria cornuta buds

These Habenaria cornuta buds at the tips of their ovaries present a club-shape at this stage of their development. The slender spurs are the only (other) exposed flower parts yet, protruding downwards from the base of each flower lip.

A broad, pointed bract envelops the base of each ovary. The flowers of H. cornuta angle outwards and upwards, spiralling around the erect stalk.

Everything about these buds is green at this stage, the stalk and parts of the floral bracts yellowish green, while the spurs are pale green to nearly white.

Flowering happens from late summer to mid-autumn (Pooley, 1998; www.orchidspecies.com).
