Anemone vesicatoria grows a tuft of trifoliolate, dark green, basal leaves, usually on long stalks. The leaflets are ovate with pointy tips, sometimes rounded. They may show distinct net-veining and their margins are variably toothed.

The plant grows a horizontal rootstock and fleshy roots. This hardy perennial herb is a shade plant of the coastal scrub, fynbos and renosterveld area. It is mostly found under bushes, trees, at forest margins or among taller scrub (Curtis-Scott, et al, 2020; iNaturalist; JSTOR; www.fernkloof.com; www.plantzafrica.com).
