Silene crassifolia subsp. crassifolia leaves

The opposite leaves of Silene crassifolia subsp. crassifolia are sessile or on very short petioles, decussate upon the stems and without stipules. The leaf shape is obovate to oblong-elliptic. The leaf texture is fleshy and felted or densely hairy.

The leaf folds in along its midrib and may curve down somewhat towards its tip. Leaves become up to 3 cm long. The margins are entire, sometimes maroon coloured. Leaf colour in picture varies from dull dark green to yellowish.

This plant was photographed in hot, exposed conditions a few metres from the highwater mark at Onrus (Bond and Goldblatt, 1984; iSpot).
