Schwantesia herrei thriving in rock

Schwantesia herrei grows its blue-green or pale beige leaves compactly together on the ground, living up to (or down to) its dwarf succulent status. The leaves are triangular in cross-section with whitish ridges on the margins and keels. Leaf-tips are finely pointed, leaf bodies variably elongated and curved in asymmetric shapes.

The plant appears greener in its rocky nook than is often seen in habitat. Maybe the red margins appear on the leaves in hard times.

Current and past flowers pay testament to the plant’s successful coping with prevailing conditions, in spite of appearing to be ensconced in a crevice with little signs of available soil.

Flowers open around mid-afternoon, closing at nightfall (Grenier, 2019; Frandsen, 2017; Williamson, 2010; Smith, et al, 1998; iNaturalist).
