Sericocoma avolans, commonly known in Afrikaans as gras-bo-bos-onder (grass on top bush below), is a woody, much-branched shrublet that reaches heights around 50 cm. Old stems become whitish.

The species distribution is widespread in the Western Cape and the Northern Cape, slightly into the west of the Eastern Cape and North West, also in Namibia.

The habitat is dry, stony flats and north-facing slopes. The species is not considered to be threatened in its habitat early in the twenty first century.

The plant used to feature in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis in traditional medicine (Van Rooyen and Van Rooyen, 2019; Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2015; Shearing and Van Heerden, 2008; iNaturalist; http://redlist.sanbi.org).
