When the splint-spikethorn is in full bloom in the Little Karoo it presents a memorable sight. This one was seen in October south of Calitzdorp.

Like many other plants of the semi-arid regions, Gloveria integrifolia achieves such performances only in the occasional peak season. Visiting the veld in the company of a perceptive local, one soon learns how many years ago such a season was last experienced. The memory of such good times carries those who care until the pageant returns.

Splint-spikethorn flowers are said to be unpleasantly scented, but not nearly as much as to prevent a close look at the spectacular display. And of course, for some photos (Coates Palgrave, 2002; iSpot).
