Schistostephium umbellatum flowerhead

The golden-yellow flowerheads of Schistostephium umbellatum grow in stem-tip corymbs or solitary.

The flowerhead has disc florets and no ray florets but the marginal florets differ from the central disc ones. The marginal ones are female while the general disc florets are bisexual although the centre of the disc may have functionally male florets. The marginal florets are stalked, the corollas of both floret types tubular and compressed.

Flowering may happen all year round. Pollination is mostly performed by insects, including honeybees. There are no pappuses on the fruit (Bond and Goldblatt, 1984; Leistner, (Ed.), 2000; iNaturalist).
