Syzygium cordatum in the Western Cape

Abundant fruit clusters of Syzygium cordatum follow the dense heads of bisexual flowers in cups formed by stem-tip leaves. The berries may be seen on the trees from before midspring to early in the following winter. They have a sour to tart taste.

The photo was taken in Onrus near Hermanus, well west of the natural distribution of this species. The trees proliferate maybe a little too well near water in this added Western Cape distribution range (Coates Palgrave, 2002; Schmidt, et al, 2002; Van Wyk and Van Wyk, 1997; Pooley, 1993; iNaturalist).
