Crassula orbicularis mountaineering

This stand of Crassula orbicularis leaf rosettes grows on a damp rock angled at a steep gradient in the natural forest near Wilderness. It does not mean that there are as many plants present as rosettes visible. This Crassula species produces long thin stolons tipped with small plantlets that will root at some distance from the parent plant.

The footholds afforded by the meagre allocations of soil in crevices of this rock say something for the mountaineering abilities of these plants. The seedling or stolon-tip plantlets live as everything on earth: as best they can, given their circumstances.

Cool moist forest conditions suit the plants well here. They are also found on the northern side of the Outeniqua Mountains in semi-arid Little Karoo conditions.
