Pelargonium triste in the Tinie Versfeld Wildflower Reserve

This Pelargonium triste plant is flowering in spring among flowers and annual grasses near the west coast of the Western Cape. The grey-green leaves are low and feathery below the tall, sturdy stalks that present the umbels of nearly white flowers well above.

The Tinie Versfeld Wildflower Reserve, 12 km west of Darling on the R315, a piece of farmland that has never been ploughed, is home to the plant photographed. Indigenous flowers have been growing undisturbed here, barring a little controlled grazing by the Slangkop farm cows. Much flower diversity is on offer in spring to those caring to stop the car and stroll (for free) along the paths among the flowers (www.darlingwildflowers.co.za).
