Tetraria bromoides is a coarse, yellow-green perennial. It is narrow-leaved and grass-like, a member of the sedge or Cyperaceae family. The tetrarias are wiry, tufted perennials with leaves growing from basal clumps. Some of them are known as bergpalmiet in Afrikaans.
The flowers of these plants grow in panicles of small brown spikes that contain male, female and bisexual florets. There are a few leaves along the flowering stems. The stems are solid, unlike grass stems that are hollow.
The plants occurr in fynbos and the Little Karoo, as well as elsewhere in Africa and Australasia (Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2010; Manning, 2007; Bean and Johns, 2005).
