Hypodiscus argenteus is a restio growing an erect tussock of culms to a height around 1 m. The unbranched culm is striped and round in cross-section.

The flowers are without perianths, but have pointed silvery bracts. The male spikelets are numerous, 5 mm long and translucent. The female spikelets are up to 2 cm long.

The species distribution is from Clanwilliam and the Cederberg to the Cape Peninsula and eastwards to Riversdale. The species is not considered to be threatened in its habitat early in the twenty first century (Dorrat-Haaksma and Linder, 2012; Bond and Goldblatt, 1984; iSpot; www.redlist.sanbi.org).
