Glottiphyllum depressum

Glottiphyllum depressum is a stemless leaf succulent that grows variably longish leaves tending to lie on the ground in two opposite arrays.

The yellow flowers of several species of this genus are rather similar. The leaves give clues of identity, but are also variable. Flower diameter of G. depressum is about 5 cm.

The spongy fruit capsules of some Glottiphyllum plants tend to fall off and open after rain, releasing their seeds.

The species distribution is in the Western Cape from Ceres through the Little Karoo to Humansdorp in the Eastern Cape.

The habitat is semi-arid shrubveld and scrubveld partly in the winter rainfall regions where some plants grow in the open and others sheltered by shrubs. The species is not considered to be threatened in its habitat early in the twenty first century (Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2015; Bond and Goldblatt, 1984; iNaturalist; http://redlist.sanbi.org).
