Gazania pectinata

Gazania pectinata, the cockscomb gazania, is a tufted, stemless annual or perennial, growing to 20 cm in height.

Its leaves are narrow, strap-shaped to elliptic and often divided into narrow lobes. The leaf midrib is sunk on the upper surface, prominent below. Leaf colour is dark green to dull green, here olive green to brownish at Kagga Kamma where conditions are fairly harsh. Leaf margins are rolled under, the lower leaf surface is white felted.

The species distribution is confined to the southwestern and coastal parts of the Western Cape.

It grows on lower slopes and coastal flats. The species is not considered threatened in habitat early in the twenty first century (Manning, 2007; Bean and Johns, 2005; Bond and Goldblatt, 1984; iSpot; www.redlist.sanbi.org).
