Gazania lichtensteinii or commonly the yellow gazania is a tufted annual or perennial, growing to 20 cm in height.
The leaves are elliptic and toothed, up to 5 cm long and 1 cm wide. They are thinly succulent, the margins rolled under slightly.
The basal markings on the ray florets are small and dark green or black. Flowering occurs late in winter and early in spring or after later rain, even in summer.
The species distribution is in the Northern Cape in Namaqualand and the Western Cape to around Clanwilliam, Piketberg and eastwards to the Little Karoo.
The habitat is diverse, typically semi-arid parts on low lying flats of sandy, gravelly or clayey soils; also on disturbed land. The species is not considered threatened in habitat early in the twenty first century (Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2015; Manning, 2009; Bond and Goldblatt, 1984; iSpot; http://redlist.sanbi.org).
