Grewia hexamita town tree

Grewia hexamita, the giant raisin, reaches tree size on a roundish stem covered in reddish bark turning dark grey when old. The main stem of this deciduous tree may often be crooked and short, the crown often sparse.

Pruning of trees in parks may modify or hide some natural features.

The wood is heavy but soft, the heartwood resembling that of ebony. Wood borers in live wood cause wood discoloration (Schmidt, et al, 2002; Van Wyk and Van Wyk, 1997; Pooley, 1993; Van Wyk, 1984; iNaturalist).
