The climbing raisin, as Grewia caffra is commonly known, is a multistemmed shrub that usually sprawls over adjacent shrubs and trees (SA Tree List No. 459). Occasionally it becomes a small tree itself.

The leaves are oblong to ovate, three-veined from the base and up to 6 cm long and 2,5 cm wide. The flowers are yellow. They appear from late spring through autumn and are characterised by massed stamens.

The species occurs in the Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo, as well as in Swaziland, Mozambique and Zimbabwe (Coates Palgrave, 2002).
