This Othonna perfoliata flowerhead displays red purple tips on its involucral bracts, partly obscured by open, yellow disc florets of the outer ring. The bract tips curve out strongly to form an interrupted rim around the florets. Closed buds sometimes allow early notice of this colouring by having purplish tips on the otherwise uniformly green involucres.

On some plants the involucres are green all over, here pale green and smooth lower down.

The later to open floret buds in the disc centre are at this stage only tiny, yellow spheres (Manning, 2007; Leistner, (Ed.), 2000; https://www.pacificbulbsociety.org).
