The leaves of Ruschia putterillii are at best not smooth. When challenged, desiccation may render them pinkish with pronounced, rounded bumps densely scattered on the surfaces. The bulging spots are translucent against light.
When life is easier, the leaves are grey green to glaucous. The short, thick leaves are equally paired and opposite, triangular in cross-section from flat inner surfaces and rounded keels at the back, ending in pointed tips (iNaturalist; https://plantlust.com).
