    Hebenstretia dura leaves and spike
    Author: Ivan Lätti
    Photographer: Francelle van Zyl

The small, simple leaves of Hebenstretia dura are fairly densely arranged, alternate to spiralling along the stems. Sessile without stipules, the leaves in picture ascend and curve out to their tips. The leaf-shape is variable, ovate to lanceolate, elliptic or linear. The midribs may be slightly sunken on the upper surfaces. The leaf margins are toothed and the tips usually pointed. The glossy green blades are from 8 mm to 30 mm long and from 1 mm to 5 mm wide.

Up top in the photo, the younger spike has broad green bracts covering their buds. The bracts attenuate abruptly to narrow, elongated tips (Pooley, 1998; iNaturalist; https://www.worldfloraonline.org).
