Crassula nudicaulis var. platyphylla

This small Crassula nudicaulis var. platyphylla plant growing in the Caledon Wildflower Garden has so far only produced one ground-level leaf rosette. The leaf arrangement is more representative of the particular plant's design, oblique rows of leaves radiating, than the conventional rosette ring.

Angled up obovate leaf slabs, red-rimmed with greener appearance than often seen, suggest obstructions to sunlight close by. Such obstructions are not in evidence and not remembered; the photo having been too focussed.

The neither modest nor arrogant resident of its gravelly perch quietly conveys a resolve of flowering plans for sometime in the uncertainty of future. Growing in a garden of sorts makes one forget that the earth itself is a garden, apart from being so many other things. Eden is both myth and fact, beliefs soluble in many media.
