    Disperis capensis var. capensis flowers

    Disperis capensis var. capensis flowers
    Author: Ivan Lätti
    Photographer: Francelle van Zyl

Ballerina-like, these slender Disperis capensis var. capensis flowers are bound to impress. The rounded bonnets, the hoods each formed by two lateral petals and one dorsal sepal, are the most colourful.

A protective bract envelops each flowering stem at the base. Its upper parts disappear behind the ridged, erect ovary that holds up the rest of the flower parts (Liltved and Johnson, 2012; Manning, 2007; Bean and Johns, 2005; iNaturalist).
