The single Edmondia sesamoides bud at the tip of a creamy stem bears appressed oblong leaves, dark green and inconspicuous, living near Hermanus. It’s hard from the picture to be sure that this isn’t perhaps E. fasciculata. E. pinifolia can be ruled out on colour. All three species grow near Hermanus, and all three flower in spring. And all living species are known to produce individual differences in specimens grown from seed.
Compare the identification difficulties from limited information in large genera, when a genus of only three species can tantalise like this. The oldest, most senior, best qualified or most powerful participant in the debate might end it. Precision is not a friend of grey areas, and perfection is the enemy of the good. The noise of error and uncertainty sometimes rings in the ears listening for answers when looking at an ever-quiet plant.
