Osteospermum oppositifolium

Osteospermum oppositifolium is a rounded shrub of 1 m tall bearing opposite leaves. The much-branched stems are brittle.

The flowerheads have pale yellow to golden ray florets and dark centres that warrant the colloquial name of dark-eyed window-seed. What window-seed signifies is unknown. Osteospermum means bone seed, a common name for plants of this genus.

O. oppositifolium grows in the west of the Western Cape and Northern Cape, also in the far south of Namibia.

The habitat is coastal and inland on dry, stony and sandy slopes and granite outcrops. The species is not considered to be threatened in its habitat early in the twenty first century (Manning, 2009; Manning and Goldblatt, 1997; http://redlist.sanbi.org).
