Leucospermum calligerum bicoloured styles

The flowerheads of Leucospermum calligerum start off pale yellow to cream coloured, fading to pinkish red as they age, and ranging from 2 cm to over 3 cm in diameter.

The pollen presenters, later the stigmas, are yellow at the style tips. Timing of the pollen grain arrival, or the female flower component selects from the landed grains available on the ripe stigma, sorts out which grain grows down to the ovule.
