Lachenalia bulbifera in flower

The about cylindrical flowers of Lachenalia bulbifera grow in a loose raceme of pinkish red or orange red tubes. The red or orange pedicels are long enough on mature flowers for the perianths to nod, firstly those lower down that open first. The corolla tip may show some green, although not always. Flowering commences before midautumn to early spring. 

The inner tepals push out just slightly further beyond the outer three in a mature flower. The inner tepals of L. rubida, another red flowering Lachenalia with a semi-overlapping distribution range are notably longer than the outer ones, allowing for identifying the two species. The anthers of the flowers of both species remain concealed within the corolla tubes (Manning, 2007; Manning and Goldblatt, 1996; iNaturalist).
